Shotgun Jazz Band plays Traditional New Orleans Jazz in the spirit of the great Revivalists. With an emphasis on ensemble playing, a stomping rhythm section, and a genuine love of the hot, bluesy, no-frills melodies that once poured forth from New Orleans' dance halls, Shotgun Jazz Band creates music that is both immediate in its influences and timeless in its appeal.
To date, Shotgun Jazz Band has recorded 3 albums; Algiers Strut 2011, their enthusiastic live release, One Drink Minimum 2012, and most recently Don’t Give Up the Ship 2013. SJB’s current lineup features Marla Dixon trumpet and vocals, Tyler ‘Twerk’ Thomson bass, Justin Peake drums, and John Dixon banjo. While SJB’s core lineup tends to be fairly consistent, on any given night some incredible New Orleans musicians such as Orange Kellin, James Evans, Craig Flory, Michael Magro, Tom Saunders, Ben Polcer, Benji Bohannon, Jon Gross, Peter Loggins, Charlie Halloran, and occasionally even Barry Martyn comes out to play.
These days Shotgun Jazz Band is as equally at home playing for tips and smiles on Royal Street as they are playing for dancers and fans at clubs, courtyards, and weddings. SJB currently enjoys residencies at The Spotted Cat and Fritzel’s European Jazz Club, and may also be found at Preservation Hall, Three Muses, Bacchanal, Maison, and Buffa’s. SJB has also been a featured guest of WWOZ’s Traditional Jazz radio show as well as the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, and has participated in several festivals including the Creole Tomato Festival, New Orleans’ Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, and the Omaha Jitterbug’s Cowtown Jamborama.
